Formerly the House of Industry and Refuge from 1877 through 1947 (basically, a 'home' for the... displaced,) and then was a museum with apparently one (if not maybe a few) extra tenants.
Another case of elevators with minds of their own and ghostly footsteps that are heard. Furniture is moved and re-organized and an the feelings of being watched and followed are pervasive in especially the attic.
The attic has a legend that was both e-mailed to us and reported by John Robert Colombo about a woman who was sent to the institution when her struggling family found out she was with child. The woman gave birth and promptly wrote a will bequeathing her sole possession, a ring, to the baby before committing suicide. It is thought that the ghost could be this woman. Granted, many sad stories and reports are bound to come from a place such as this and who knows if this is the spirit people are encountering or if it is one of the many other souls who passed through this building.
According to Mysteries of Ontario, psychic investigators also stumbled across the spirits of two quarrelsome old women in the edifice so who knows how many or who the ghost really is.
Former curator of the Wellington County Museum and author Pat Mestern has a book called "Anna: Child of the Poor House" (1981) that details some of the ghostly occurrences within the museum.
We are currently looking for more stories and reports from Elora and all the surrounding towns. If you can assist us with information on this site or any others, please send it to ontario@ontarioghosts.org
