Notes From The Director - 1998

Since ancient times, humans have been haunted by spectres, poltergeists, phantoms and spirits. Some good, some bad. Almost ALL attributed to one of two sources: the spirits of the dead or demons or angels of some sort. I personally do believe in ghosts and have experienced many different types of phenomena over my 31 years and in relating my stories, I have encountered many normal people who have also had their share of spooky experiences.

Whether or not I believe that the spirits or souls of the dead come back to haunt us or that demons or harbingers are wandering around, the jury's out. I have my own views on the so-called supernatural and this is not the forum for that. Instead, let me present you with the strange and unusual things that I have found or experienced.

From all I have learned and experienced, it seems that no matter how you slice them, hauntings of the ghostly kind (not to be mistaken with some poltergeist activities) seem to revolve around a set of certain criteria as far as where they take place...

  • A sudden or unexpected death in the area
  • A terrible moment of sudden emotion from the past
  • A sad or deppressing area that the "ghost" frequented in life
  • A happy or memorable space that the "ghost" held dear
Any of these areas are ripe for a haunting. In answer to one of the most common questions, YES! most hospitals are absolutely filled with ghosts but it is common practice to not talk about or acknowledge these stories.

There are some who also think ghosts are absolutely non-existent in the real worldbut are strong psychic impressions that only some people pick up on.

My experiences have shown me that most ghostly phenomena seems to follow the patterns of the person who became the ghost! Shopping, visiting friends, going to the bathroom, all the things we do in normal life.

But what about spirituality? What about heaven, hell and all places in between? What about reincarnation? Well, I don't know. All I do know is that many people I know and people with whom I've spoken with have had experiences with the unknown.

I do admit, however, that I have noticed that hauntings involving First Nation's (Native Indian) Burial Grounds do seem to have a relatively spiritual nature. Native Canadians do seem to have a definite spiritual connection with the resting place of their ancestors and the places they occupied in death. Of the several hauntings I have visited, none are as unnerving as these.

A poltergeist or noisy ghost is a curious thing. Poltergeist acivity, for the most part, comes in two flavours. One is associated with a standard haunting, that is to say that the hauntees experience noises and sounds and even physical movement of something or someone that MAY have existed in the area before. For example, a tap being run, lights turning on and off, doors opening and closing, footsteps, etc.

The other is the random flavour... Things hurtling from one place to another by themselves, furniture being knocked about, weird noises like growls, shrieks and laughter that have no connection to the historical makeup of the site. These noisy ghosts are usually centred around a troubled adolescent who might be the focus. Some people think that this might be latent psychokinesis in action. Again, for me, I only study the former category. While ESP and psychic abilities intrigue me, history holds me like a spell.

What about my story? What about the two stories I love the most from friends and associates? I'll tell those later. For now, if you would like to relay your brush with a ghost, e-mail us at submissions@torontoghosts.org
