London - Eldon House

One of London's oldest and most impressive homes, Eldon House dates from 1834 and was built by John Harris and stayed in his family until it was given to the city to be run as a museum.

In 1856, one of John's daughters, Sarah, was awaiting her affianced for a ball at the home. The fellow was uncharacteristically late and Sarah was worried.

At 6:00pm, her fiance finally showed up. He seemed remote and out-of-sorts. He was muddy and thoroughly disheveled. Sarah and her father greeted him, but instead of walking in, he turned and made his way disappearing into the dark.

Later that night, his riderless horse appeared at the gate and this was a big cause for concern.

The concern was justified when his body was recovered the next day in a ford at the Thames river at the West end of concession 4. He had been thrown from his horse and killed in the fall... His watch had stopped at exactly 6:00pm.

The "good news" is that Sarah apparently did recover and even, eventually, happily remarried.

Still, this legend/report is a very interesting one...
