Port Milford - South Bay Mariners' Cemetery

Another courtesy of John Robert Colombo's wonderful book, "Mysteries of Ontario" that we've happened upon during some research into haunted cemeteries.

Our original statement seems to be standing that indeed, cemeteries are not haunted by the bodies interred within them but with the spirits of the lives of those that visited or tended them.

Case in point is a black Labrador retriever that is seen in the South Bay Mariners' Cemetery. Legend has it that the dog's master was a sailor on a schooner that was moored at Port Milford when the unfortunate fellow, under the "grip of the grape" as they say, met his end by slipping into the schooner's hold where he met with fatal injuries.

His dog, they say, refused to leave the ship and when forced to, would not abandon the sailor's grave site. Now, the spirit of this faithful companion haunts the cemetery howling at night for the mournful memory of his long since departed master.

If you're interested in ghosts of animals, Lynda Quirino, the Assistant Director of the GHRS has written an article about them which you can read by clicking here.

Have you heard or experienced this phantom dog? Possibly you have another experience from Port Milford or anywhere in Prince Edward County? Please, e-mail our representative for the Kingston and Eastern Ontario, jennifer@ontarioghosts.org
