Local Cemeteries - Corbyville/Plainfield

Elmwood Cemetery is located north of the town of Corbyville on River Road (Thurlow Township, Concession 4, Lot 6), and is the final resting place of Thomas Jessop. Thomas was not a man that stands out for how he lived, but he does for how he died. His tombstone is inscribed with: In memory of Thomas Jessop who was MURDERED at Glen Ross Mills on the 9th of July 1870, aged 33 years and 11 months. Was he murdered? Was the crime ever solved?

One other oddity in this cemetery is a telephone booth to display information about the cemetery. Who are you going to try and call?

Victoria Cemetery is located east of the town of Plainfield (Concession 6, Lot 26), and is the final resting place of Arthur Hoskin. But where he rests is up to debate. The reason for this is Arthur has his name inscribed on two different gravestones with two different wives. Where is he buried? Only his wives know for sure!

We are very interested in looking into these things further. If you have any information that you can add to this story, please email our researcher in the area at brendag@ontarioghosts.org
