University of Windsor - Assumption College - Huron Hall -  Windsor

Over the years we've had a couple of people write to us about a phantom in the University of Windsor. Both e-mails were different in their description of the ghost except in one key factor.

The apparition is seen dressed in "white" and "glides down the hall" in Assumption College.

According to John Robert Colombo  in "Mysteries of Ontario" he thought he may have gotten to the source of this ghost.

A student he identified only as "Gene C." apparently would sneak down to the "junk room" and lit a cigarette (prohibited in the building,) dressed only in a white nightshirt. Another student wandering late at night spotted Gene and immediately cried "Ghost!"

Even after the admission, apparently, the "ghost" of the college was still talked about, and we believe that thanks to a former student who contacted us we now may finally have the true version of the ghost story.

The ghost stories that involve the "Lady In White" are from a student residence that was located a few blocks off campus near the local Macdonalds known as Huron Hall. The residence was a former motel with a very seedy past, and before that it was apparently the site of a lumber mill. The apparition most commonly reported is believed to date back to the days of the motel when a local prostitute was rumoured to have been murdered there. There is another apparition this time of a male that is less commonly reported that may in fact date back to the lumber mill where an employee died as the result of an accident.

No matter the actual source of the hauntings over the years several students have claimed to have encountered these apparitions either in the halls or in a specific room. One student claimed to have seen the apparition sitting upon her bed!

Other happenings included mysterious lights, electrical disturbances, and other mild poltergeist activity.

The building that housed Huron Hall was sold in 2000 and demolished in early 2001.

We now believe that the reports of a ghost on campus were confused with the reports from Huron Hall. It is a shame that the building no longer exists as it sounds as if it warranted further investigation.

Our thanks go out to the former student who stayed in Huron Hall for sharing this with us. If you have further information please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Update February 2012 one of our readers writes:

"Just came across this site as I was just all of a sudden curious what has been put up on the web about the Old Huron Hall at the University of Windsor.  I can share my experiences with it as I lived there for 3 years.

I was in 228 for the first year I was there and 225 for the 2nd.  Both rooms had activity, but 228 was by far the hotbed of it all.  I have seen the white woman twice in the room near the bathroom, my roomate also had seen her there.  The next year, I was now in 225 and my girlfriend best friend was in 228.  I have had pots fly off the shelf in 225, but in 228 we have seen a wisp in the air floating by.  Her friend who doesn't believe in anything freaked out one time as we always talked about the woman.  She saw something that she had no explanation for and wouldn't elaborate on it, but she was very freaked out.

The final year, I was in 226 I think, and my girlfriend now lived in 228.  We experienced one evening of that dread feeling and something being in the room with us.  The temperature in the room just plummeted to almost freezing temps and we just knew something else was in there, it was that feeling.  Not sure how long the temp drop lasted for, but it was quite the experience.

So just a few more details on this as I had done a lot of research on the ghost activity in the dorm.  We actually had a few people that got together and discussed this years after about our experiences as I was the main contact for the history of the place.  I had researched the entire past and all the old newspaper articles about the history.  There has never been any confirmed documentation about any murders happening in the building, but there had been a few stabbings and altercations when it used to be a hotel, but none which were fatal.  When it was the lumber mill, I don't believe I recall any work accidents there either that were reported in the news paper.  It seems that whatever it was haunting the location wasn't attached to the building itself, but the land.

Anyways just some more info I thought I would add if I hadn't already added this back in the 90's.  I knew I had contacted several people and places about the Huron Hall ghost.  I know from my old dorm friends there, that 222 supposedly was a very active room, but when talking to people that lived in 222 I believe they said they only did a seance in there once and it got a bit freaky but that was it.  I still have contact with one of the guys that lived in that room, so maybe I'll ask him about it someday.

Either way, it's a shame the place is now gone and rubble.  I check it out when I go back there to visit friends and I think it's still just a pile of dirt right now on the location.  I'm sure I'm forgetting about other instances over the course of 3 years there, but those were the ones that stuck out.  228 being the most active, 225 having some minor things (namely the pots flying off the shelf), and 225 which I don't think had anything happen..."

I lived in Huron Hall, University Of Windsor from 1986 to 1989. I never saw the ghost, but a friend sleeping overnight in my room, woke up in the middle of the night and claimed to see a lady sitting at foot of the bed. Room 135 (1988 - 1989).
