Former Bay View Hotel - Bruce Mines Ontario

The Bay View Hotel, in it's day, was one of the finest establishments in Bruce Mines, Ontario. According to a reader, an unfortunate mentally challenged child was "kept" in the attic of the hotel in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Reports range from mild poltergeist activity (things going "missing" only to turn up somewhere else; unexpected phantom footsteps in hallways; doors and cupboards opening and closing of their own accord), but by far the most unsettling are the reports from those who ventured into the attic at night heard a crying baby.

The page on the Bay View Hotel in Ontario Ghost Stories Volume II by Barbara Smith, states that the building no longer exists. It does exist, but not as the Bay View Hotel - it is now a private residence. I am continuing my research on the history of the house. There is a tie between the Bay View Hotel and the 10th Marquess of Queensbury - Percy Sholto Douglas (October 13, 1868-August 1, 1920). According to the book,"Ten Good Years" by Alice Rose Stephani (who apparently lived in the house) it is Marquess who is the source of the footsteps in the hallway, and also the smell of lilacs that comes and goes in the house. He apparently walks to grounds and visits the attic which has been sealed off for many years. She also confirms in her book that individuals that currently live in Bruce Mines have not only heard the footsteps, but also the sound of a baby crying in the attic. I will let you know more as my investigation continues.

Needless to say, we need more information! Please, if you have anything to share, e-mail our investigator/researcher for the area at lisak@ontarioghosts.org
